Change is often viewed with reluctance. However, sometimes change is welcomed. Health problems inspire a welcoming attitude to change. For example, type 2 diabetes is an affliction that we would rather lose.
Traditional Medical Diagnosis and Treatment
Your medical physician will tell you that the treatment for diabetes is drugs and insulin. It cannot be cured; at best it can be controlled. He/she has to; that is all that was taught in medical school. We now know that a better outcome is achievable by changing from the standard American diet to a healthy diet.
The usual course of type 2 diabetes involves steadily increasing weight, slowly increasing blood sugar, higher doses of drugs and more of them, and complications, such as vision difficulties (maybe blindness), kidney problems, and pains in the leg. With drugs and insulin, this is the way. However, a better way exists.
Reversing Diabetes Naturally– A Better Way
Neal Barnard, M.D, shows in his book Dr. Neal Barnard’s Program for Reversing Diabetes that you can restore insulin function and reverse type 2 diabetes. In his book, the key is a healthy diet instead of the standard American diet. Also, Joel Fuhrman, M D., in his book The End of Diabetes proves that type 2 diabetes is reversible with a healthy diet instead of the standard American diet.
The Standard American Diet and Diabetes
We all know the standard American diet (SAD). Its cornerstone is a hefty piece of meat, seafood, or chicken, a starch such as potato or rice, a token amount of vegetable, and lots of fat, such as butter, vegetable oil, or margarine. This diet high in animal protein and containing 35-40% calories from fat is making us fat and sick.
Diabetics have to control their diabetes with glucose monitoring, HbA1C readings, regular visits to the doctor, and adjustments in their drugs. This is not an effective approach. With type 2 diabetes, conventional medical treatments focus on controlling blood sugar instead of arresting and reversing diabetes. Even with adequate glucose control, the diabetes persists. Instead, change your diet thereby eliminating and reversing diabetes.
A Healthier Diet and Reversing Diabetes
A healthy diet that protects against type 2 diabetes, and many other afflictions, is plant-based, with no animal protein. Utilize only whole foods, no processed foods. This healthy diet is low fat, about 10% of calories from fat.
Dr. Neal Barnard, in his book, advises, “Choose foods from plant sources. Avoid all animal products and keep vegetable oils to a minimum.” He recommends four new food groups: whole grains, legumes, vegetables, and fruits. He lists foods to avoid: meats, poultry, fish, eggs (whites and yolks), and all dairy products. Also, avoid added oils including margarine, salad dressing, mayonnaise, cooking oils, etc., fried foods, avocadoes, olives, peanut butter, and refined foods, such white potatoes, and foods made with white flour.
Can You Reverse Type 2 Diabetes?
About 28 million Americans have diabetes; 90-95% of them have type 2 diabetes. About 5-10% have type 1 diabetes, which is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, usually at a young age.
A type 1 diabetic will always need insulin. However, with a healthy diet instead of the standard American diet, less insulin is usually needed, possibly only half as much. Furthermore, with a healthy diet instead of the standard American diet, a type 1 diabetic can look forward to a near normal life and a full life expectancy.
Further, the web sites of Drs. John McDougall and Joel Fuhrman list many success stories by type 2 diabetics who reversed their diabetes by changing from the standard American diet to a healthy diet. Information from numerous sources, such as the ones listed here, prove that diabetes can be arrested and reversed, not just controlled. The type 1 diabetic can anticipate a normal life and a full life span.
Nutritional Science and Medical School Curriculum
The omission of nutritional science from the curriculum at our medical schools condemns diabetics to much pain and suffering and a premature death. Although literally thousands of scientific articles exist describing the key importance of foods in maintaining health and avoiding the afflictions that plague our society, medical schools do not include this key information in their curricula. Unfortunately, no authority exists to direct their attention to nutritional studies.
For diabetics the choice is clear. Continue with the standard American diet and the diabetes will progress, causing much pain and suffering. Your physician will not help you; he/she does not know how. However, change to a healthy plant-based whole foods, low fat diet and your diabetes will clear; your blood sugar will be normal; you will feel good; you will look good.
