Craniopathy Technique
(aka Chiropractic Cranial Adjusting)
Craniopathy, a specialized area within chiropractic, focuses on the function and movement of the skull bones (cranium) and their impact on the central nervous system, particularly the flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
This manual therapy encourages the body’s natural healing mechanisms to improve the operation of the central nervous system, relieve the negative effects of stress, improve overall health and strengthen the body’s immune system.
As a field within Chiropractic, Craniopathy focuses on restoring and analyzing proper function to the Cranium (skull), dura meningeal system, the mechanics of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and the central nervous system. It differs from Craniosacral Therapy, and is an advanced training of the Sacro Occipital Technique (SOT®).

Here’s a more detailed explanation:
- Focus on the Cranium:
Craniopathy is concerned with the 22 interlinked cranial bones and their movement, which is crucial for proper nervous system function.
- CSF and Nervous System:
The skull is considered a pumping mechanism for CSF, which provides nutrients and removes waste from the brain and spinal cord. Craniopathy aims to ensure optimal CSF flow and nervous system function.
- Distinction from Craniosacral Therapy:
While both craniopathy and craniosacral therapy involve working with the cranium, craniopathy is a more in-depth study within chiropractic, specifically Sacro Occipital Technique (S.O.T.).
- Benefits:
Craniopathy can help address cranial misalignments or subluxations, which can distort nervous system function and lead to various issues, including cranial and facial asymmetries.
- Techniques:
Craniopathy involves assessing the moveable sutures of the cranium and the flow of CSF, and then applying gentle pressure to the cranial bones to facilitate their “release” and repositioning.
- Importance for Babies and Children:
Because their cranial sutures have not fully fused, adjustments can have a significant impact on their development.
- Other Names:
Some people may refer to craniopathy as “craniosacral therapy” or “cranial osteopathy”.
Relaxation Therapy
Progressive relaxation, Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), Systems Integration Therapy, Relaxation Motivation Facilitation Technique (RMF), are some of the techniques routinely used in stress management. Techniques such as craniopathy and therapeutic massage can also be great stress relievers.
