Reading Intervention that is Effective, Personalized, and Encouraging

Linda Cherubino has been helping students read for over 16 years here at Cherubino Health Center, in public and private schools, and with homeschoolers. Her M.Ed. is in Reading and Literacy and her training is in Wilson Reading, Orton-Gillingham, Lindamood-Bell, RAVE-O, and Project Read.

Each lesson is

explicit, sequential, cumulative, phonics-based, multisensory, and emotionally sound.
designed specifically for each of my students to be exactly what they need to succeed.
paced to hold the student’s interest; reinforce previous skills; introduce new skills in explicit, manageable steps; and build confidence through consistent practice and encouragement.
taught with a minimum of the “exceptions to the rules” that plague so many struggling readers.
reveals the logical patterns that make English reading and spelling more understandable. Although English is complex, it follows many predictable patterns that struggling students can learn with explicit instruction. Students learn that English makes a lot more sense than most people know because, in fact, ENGLISH ISN’T CRAZY!

Wilson Reading Program and the Orton-Gillingham Approach

Wilson Reading is a structured, sequential system of reading instruction, based on the Orton-Gillingham approach. It is recommended for students from grades one through adult who need a higher level of reading intervention than is possible in a regular classroom setting.

Orton-Gillingham is an approach to reading acquisition that is well researched and takes the whole child into consideration. Dr. Samuel Orton began studying dyslexia over nine decades ago. He and Anna Gillingham were among the pioneers of what is now referred to as the “science of reading”. Together, they researched and formulated the most effective reading remediation techniques.

The Ability to Read Well is Crucial

Reading is a skill that opens the world to us. When a person has to work too hard to read – whether it is frustrating, time-consuming, or even to the point where it is a tormenting ordeal – the world of the reader may seem smaller, harder to navigate, and intimidating.

Why Strong Reading Skills Matter

In school – During my student teaching in high school English language arts, I was struck by how many bright, capable students struggled with with reading and writing. Since then, i have dedicated my career to helping students overcome reading challenges so they can fully demonstrate their intelligence and abilities across all academic subjects. Over the last sixteen years, I have been witness to the truth that my students are creative, intelligent, and resilient young people who happen to struggle with reading.

In life – Many adults quietly live with reading difficulties, especially dyslexia, that limit educational, professional, and personal opportunities. Strong literacy skills support career success, lifelong learning, confident communication, and meaningful participation in civic and cultural life.

For homeschool Families –As a homeschooling parent, i understand both the rewards and challenges of teaching children at home. Even with the the individualized instruction that homeschooling naturally offers, some children need specialized reading intervention. I enjoy working with homeschool groups and helping parents teach reading more effectively.

Every Student Can Become a Good Reader

Learning differences don’t have to impede good reading – every brain learns differently. Some students are naturally gifted musically, athletically, or artistically. Nevertheless, ALL students can, with dedicated instruction, excel in these areas. This is also true with reading. While about 20% of students struggle to some degree with reading, ALL students can, with skilled, evidence-based, compassionate instruction, excel in this area as well.
