Are You Meeting Your Basic Daily Health Needs?
1. How many glasses of plain pure water do you drink each day?
Water – many people are not aware of the latest research finding that adults need 8 to 10, 8 ounce glasses of pure water each day.
Many people are actually dehydrated. The body is 70% or more water and all of the chemical reactions that are necessary to sustain life occur in a fluid environment. Although this quantity may seem “unnatural”, the processed foods that make up a great deal of our diets (breads, chips, condiments, sweets) are not only water deficient, but they deplete the body’s fluid reserves. These so-called foods require large quantities of fluid in order to be diluted for processing. Water, therefore, is imperative! Our recommended reading list includes the book Your Body’s Many Cries for Water.
At Cherubino Health Center we have seen many conditions completely disappear by improving water intake.
Calculating Water Intake: There are several water consumption formulas that can give you a general idea of how much water you should be drinking each day. The simplest of these formulas works as follows. For sedentary people, of 250 pounds or less, take your weight and divide it by two to arrive at the number of ounces of water you should drink each day.
Therefore, a person weighing 120 pounds, would consume 60 ounces of water per day which translates into 7.5, 8 ounce glasses. For people over 250 pounds the accuracy of the formula is iffy since one could make an argument that anything over 15 cups per day could cause potential problems depending on your individual health circumstances. For people living a more active lifestyle, an additional 16% water intake is recommended over the sedentary calculations. Again, as a rule of thumb, most people will be doing well if they can consume 8 to10, 8 ounce glasses of pure water each day.
2. Are you breathing clean quality air in your home, at your workplace, in your car and in your town or city?
Air – Clean, fresh air is not as easy to come by today as it was in the past. Many people also have the tendency to breathe shallowly and, during times of stress or needed strength or concentration, to unconsciously hold their breath. The following suggestions will increase our capacity to take in oxygen, the element that is vital to our trillions of cells each and every second.
Use of an air filter or ionizer is recommended to improve the quality and purity of the air in your home, office and even your automobile.
Breathing exercises: To awaken and calmly energize the mind and body first thing in the morning and anytime throughout the day try the following exercise. While in a seated position place your hands on your thighs and begin by breathing in through your mouth slowly and deeply. Next, exhale slowly through your nose. Repeat this process 12 times. You have just dramatically increased the oxygen that is available to your cells.
3. How many hours of quality sleep do you get each day?
Sleep – The human body requires a minimum of eight hours of continuous undisturbed sleep in a peaceful darkened environment. 90% of all of your body’s repair processes occur at night.
Vital brain and other neurological activities are reset and reinforced during a peaceful night’s sleep, cells are manufactured and repaired and our emotional well being is restored through dreaming.
Lack of sleep is the next “disease” that drug companies hope to market in order to sell sleeping pills. However, a drug induced sleep will not restore functionality and health to the body in the same way as natural sleep. Giving ourselves the time and proper surroundings for sleep is a necessity.
4. Do you participate in exercise on a regular basis?
It seems like people are divided into two distinct categories. Those that exercise with a passion and those that do no exercise at all. For most people a moderate or even minimal amount of exercise on a regular basis would be a major step in the right direction.
Our bodies need to move. Movement increases blood circulation to the trillions of cells in the body in order for all of those cells to most optimally obtain oxygen and vital nutrients and eliminate their toxic waste products. Regular movement also keeps muscles tuned and joints mobile. It deepens respiration, decreases inflammation and improves our emotions. As the late great Jack LaLanne liked to say, “Move it or lose it!”
We recommend that people undertake an exercise program based on their individual needs, desires and abilities. Knowing that movement, conditioning, and rehabilitation are three of the most important and long-lasting ways we can impact our health, Cherubino Health Center offers personalized Active Care sessions with Dr. Chris Cherubino.
5. Are you getting high quality nutrients in sufficient amounts on a daily basis?
Nutritional knowledge and awareness is growing in the United States and around the world. Numerous problems exist that have resulted in massive portions of the population living in an undernourished state. Of the nearly 100 vital nutrients that are needed to maintain optimum health, most people are getting very few on a daily basis.
One of the reasons for this is the poor farming techniques that have been used in this country for decades and are now being exported around the world. Soil has become dangerously depleted and therefore the food that is grown in this soil cannot and does not contain anywhere near the number of nutrients, vitamins, minerals and trace minerals that are required to maintain health and function in the human body.
The good news is that there are responsible companies that are producing extremely high quality nutritional supplements and nutraceuticals. The bad news is that there are only a handful of these companies out there.
With all that being said we highly recommend the Five Essential Nutrients that are available at the Cherubino Health Center for everyone from toddlers on up.
6. Are you eating sufficient quantities of alkaline ash foods every day?
The human body is an acid producing organism that requires constant replenishment with what are known as alkaline foods. Experts tell us that 75% of our food intake should ideally be alkaline ash in content.
For those patients who are unfamiliar with acid/alkaline nutritional concepts, there is an informative free report available online (in the Acid Alkaline fact sheet) available at our Members Page, that can help you understand and apply these important principles.
7. Do you have peace of mind?
We are truly mind, body and spirit. It has been said that a peaceful mind is a spiritual attribute and that a healthy mind leads to a healthy body. I would also add that all parts need to be in balance and that a healthy body leads to a healthy mind and that a healthy spiritual life leads to a healthy body.
I encourage all of my patients to meditate, pray and consistently exercise for the health of their mind, body and spirit.
8. (Preventive Treatment) Are you receiving holistic care on a preventative ongoing basis?
Holistic Treatment – Many of you who are reading this are well acquainted with holistic healthcare since you are patients of Cherubino Health Center. A considerable number of you are actively pursuing preventative healthcare as well as maintaining an excellent food and nutritional program.
By simple definition, holistic healthcare considers the entirety of bodily systems and the interactions between all parts of the body, mind and spirit. Holistic medicine investigates and treats the cause of dis-ease as well as its effects and symptoms.
Holistic medicine is concerned with the function of the body and what any apparent dysfunctions are indicating. Online, there is an informative free report entitled Energy Medicine, Healing for the 21st-Century. We highly recommend that anyone seeking further information about the how’s and why’s of natural, holistic and alternative medicine read this report in its entirety.
9. (Helping Others) Do you take time on a regular basis to help others less fortunate than yourself?
Growing up in the 1950s, I, Dr. Ron Cherubino, witnessed communities of people helping one another. Statistically, people in those days gave more of their time, money and other resources to help people in need, than we do today.
There is nothing better than helping others. Most people are familiar with the saying, what you put out you get back. And while I would never recommend that people give in order to get, it is true that giving with an open heart is amazingly good medicine.
We encourage you to share the good news of your life with others, help those in need and donate your time and energy to those less fortunate than yourself. To empower you on your path toward greater peace of mind and good health, we encourage people to give to some of their favorite charities and nonprofit organizations.
